basically to bp, you are not going to get any more if he had cal contracts. you have proven to us you can separate safely? correct? >> that's right. bp is the large event fuel supplier for the department defense. last calendar year they had contracts worth $135,000,000,000, mainly to the air force, which uses a lot of jet fuel. >> yeah. >> and bp was far and away the largest fuel supplier to the department of defense. they also are the largest offshore -- holder of offshore leases. they have over 700 leases. they have seven active wells in the gulf of mexico so when the epa made this announcement, the department of interior, the federal agency that overseas gulf of mexico leasing echoed that access to leases would also be off limits until this matter is resolved. now, here is where -- >> bill: can they survive this as a company? >> i think it will be very difficult but the problem here is that bp immediately issued a statement after the epa made its announcement and bp said we are in mature talks with the epa. we have submitted a 100-page document outlinin
incredibly low last year. office max got put through the metaphor cal meat grinder. it was horrible. falling from $17 to $4. as the company came into 2012 the ball was set very low. when the expectations are that low, even lousy results can take the stock hire as long as they aren't downright pitiful. last year sales nowhere near good. but in line with the street's expectations and not absolutely hard which was good enough to give the stock some lift at these levels. even though max has rallied this year, it climbed from $17. it still has a way to go before it's back to even. when you look at it in that context, this rally doesn't seem insane. office max has been trying to get its house in order. it announced it was reinstating its two cent per share quarterly dividend. not much. the stock yields about 1%. it also told us it was conducting a comprehensive capital allocation review. designed to simplify its balance sheet. a couple of important elements here. office max got caught up in the terrible lehman bankruptcy. they had bonds backed by lehman connected to timber assets. the courts resol
will cepheus cal conservatives outraged and so this is kind of a high risk game, i believe, for boehner right now. >> is there any deal that wouldn't explode the tea party? >> well, yeah. >> what would be the deal? >> the deal that wouldn't explode it is if you cut a lot of spending and you don't all of a sudden raise taxes to a higher tax rate. i think they would be fine getting rid of some of the loopholes, but if this goes to where it's just higher tax rates on the rich and very little spending cuts, they little reform, i think there will be huge outrage. >> how about a sizable adjustment in entitlements, a big -- billions of dollars in cuts in regular spending, appropriations spending, and a reduction in the rich person's tax rate, a rise to 37% or 38%, would that sell with the right or not? >> i think there's a chance if they would see real reform, real cuts, more than what the president was saying, 2.5 times of cuts for every tax increase, but what they don't want are tax increases now and future cuts. that's not going to work. >> okay. thank you. just want to know what the rules were i
federal courts have found unconstitutional. they're also expected to talk about prop 8 which is cal kl's ban on same-sex marriage. >>> that woman who was attacked and disfigured by a chimp in connecticut is settling with the animal owner's estate. remember charla nash? she's going to get about $4 million. her lawsuit originally asked for $50 million. the chimp's owner died in 2010. nash had to undergo a face transplant because of that attack. >>> we're learning who holds the two winning tickets for the powerball jackpot. in missouri, officials say cindy and mark hill bought their tickets as a dearborn gas station. lottery officials will hold a news conference in just a little while. meanti meantime, a maryland man may have the other winning ticket which was bought in arizona. a cashier at a gas station says a man dressed in a construction uniform came in yesterday and asked for the number. when he told him the man confirmed it with other customers and then ran out. >>> the new york city police officer seen in this picture giving a pair of boots that he bought to a barefoot homeless man
they want to have taxes raids on the white house. it's not a fiscal policy. is that a punishment orifice cal policy? >> i don't think it many a punishment. not in and of itself which is why you have to couple that with three times as much spending cuts. these people have had the best of the best for the last 20 years. when there is a tax bill they get favored. it's time for them to give a little back. andrea says all these people will be hurt. they will be hurt because her party is holding on for a bunch of 2%ers who don't need the money. >> i just said if we raise taxes they need to be coupled with billions in spending cuts. that's not what the white house is proposing. they are proposing a second stimulus and more spending. >> this is a negotiation. >> this is a wealth transfer program. >> i don't think anybody in the white house believes they will get away with this proposal they put forward. martha: we'll talk to kevin mark carthy and we'll see what he thinks about which side is ridiculous and which side is asking too much. thanks for coming. bill: four weeks. we all hear the heartbreaki
is to extend the mid cal class tax cut. it's almost half of the impact on our g.d.p. the upper income is onen tenth of one% in terms of economic impact. 1/10 of 1%. it's a question of listening to the american people. >> i would like to close by saying a lot has been said about what will happen if we go over the cliff. let's think about what will happen if we don't and the confidence that the market cease and the confidence that consumers will have further creating jobs. the confidence that they have that we can get a job done here, that's really important. but it's about job creation and growth that is so important. a job is the best answer to most every challenge that a family has. it is also a great way to relieve the federal budget of some of the social services that are necessary. and more important than that, it's the dignity of work and rewarding it and the fairness that the tax code that this is taking us to the clinton tax rates. others can speak to what it was under reagan and the rest of that. but the clinton tax rates which enabled the private sector to create more than 28 million
to understand that -- and i'll speak slowly so all the lib cals out there understand. when the next congress is gaveled in, two-thirds of our income is fixed and stunted. republicans are asking for a reduction in government spending. there has never been a liberal progressive a democrat that can find any issue, especially social issues that need to be cut back. it's just not in their genes. that's how we established $16 trillion in debt. of course you can include george bush and his compassion nate conservativism which gave us a true trillion dollars, and then of course we have the president whose george bush on steroids when it comes to spending. now the problem overall is unless this country comes to grips with the fact that we can't afford all these social issues at the level that we're spending, this country is not going to go down the cliff, they're going to go down the drain. host: that was howard in california. danny says the reason we have a spending problem is because the rich investor class has created a low wage for free trade. host: here are some tweets we've been receiving on th
discussed the in this cal cliff and how congress can prevent it. if congress does nothing every family will see their taxes go up at its beginning of next year. a typical middle class family of cow will see them rise by $2,200. >> he urged congress to pass a law to stop the tax hike. . >> i'm willing to move forward in good faith. our framework still stands. instead of raising tax rates we can produce similar amount of revenue, reforming the tax code to close loopholes and lower tax rates. >> house speaker again saying that the talks are going nowhere and saying more needs to happen. the speaker said they are at a stalemate and hundreds of billions of dollars in tax increases and spends cuts would take effect. >> oakland mayor has appointed swanson to be her deputy mayor. he will start on monday. he was co chair of her mayoral campaign. >> oakland parolee has plead no contest to connection could a deadly assault. prosecutors say ace be medicare dan ankles mcdanieel beat a maneuver was shot to death. the oakland mayor said the shooting was part of the reason they decided to clear o
murdock in indiana, mr. i'm not a witch o'donnell. ken bucken in cal colorado. it's impossible to advance a conservative agenda in the country because to do that you need to be able to win elections. let's talk about this idea of conservism tonight a bit. because conserve vative for too many voters in this country has become si no, ma'am mouse with loonnyness over the last couple of election cycles and we have a problem in the republican party that the democrats had a deal with in the 1970's and 1980's when our policy makers, our elected political leaders were scared to death to stand up to the special interest groups in the party. and chiefly in the republican party, that's the conservative entertainment complex. conservatism is a serious governing philosophy that has served the country well over its history. conservatism is not a cult of personality where we define who is and who is not a conservative over their fidelity to outrageous statement that is rush limbaugh makes. the mark of a true conservative isn't fidelity to rush limbaugh stigmatizing bullying and calling that young laid a
